Students in the Senior Learning Community have been busy honing their Italian language skills through storytelling in particular through comics. They read the comic ‘Che Cosa Fai? by Elio Guarnuccio, Ray Matsen and Daniel Reed. Students then had to illustrate their daily activities and using phrases like “Che cosa fai da solo?” (What do you do by yourself?) to create their own comic. They learnt how to express their likes and dislikes orally and through written texts.
The primary goal of this task was to transition students from memorizing phrases to constructing original dialogue. By creating these comic strips, students practiced:
-
Sentence Structure: Using the correct word order to ask and answer questions about daily life.
-
Verb Usage: Mastering the use of the verb piacere (to like) in both positive and negative forms.
-
Grammatical Connectivity: Using conjunctions like ma (but) and e (and) to create sophisticated, flowing sentences.
